will achieve its objectives through improving access for these communities to health services, education; training and employment opportunities; increased income (e.g. links with local credit union etc); health education; links with community organisations; and through basic and personal skills development.

has staff based in the Voluntary sector, with London Borough of Hillingdon and at the PCT. There is no ‘centre’ but a programme of project work and outreach sessions. Contact us for more information.

The project will deliver a number if services in the first few years:

  • A college course for local Refugee & Asylum Seekers to train to become Community Advocate & Interpreters.  The individuals will be paid for helping their local community to access and understand services provided in Hillingdon.

  • A series of basic skills and education for Travellers and Single homeless including IT, literacy and numeracy, budgeting, and Health & safety issues.

  • Provision of a programme of Health Promotion and Awareness to encourage the groups to choose and sustain Healthier Lifestyles.  E.g. specialised sessions such as nutrition, or programmes of relaxation or/and reduction in substance misuse.

  • Provide a mobile unit that will provide Primary Health Care (screenings, health checks etc)  - the Unit will house an outreach team of Specialist Health Visitor, Nurse Practitioner and GP (part time) who will visit the communities using the mobile unit and community venues to offer regular access to Primary Health Care.

  • Support for current services and providers to adapt their work to ensure the continuation of access by the target groups. E.g. supporting a GP surgery to offer literature in numerous languages and use the trained interpreters to ease the registration process.

  • The mobile unit will also host sessions from relevant support agencies offering advice, information and direction such as The Citizens Advice Team, Adult Education promotion, Childcare support and Credit Unions etc.

The project is funded for 5 years through the New Opportunity Fund, Hillingdon PCT, Healthy Hillingdon and London Borough of Hillingdon.  The project commenced in April 2003.  Partners in this project include:
